Due to the Covid boat sales boom of the past few years, many boats have changed hands. We have seen more unskilled boaters owning new and used boats, and many do not understand the maintenance and care necessary to maintain a vessel. There are many boats on the market today that have not been properly cared for.
Before you purchase any used boat, find the common issues with that make, model and year, and have a knowledgeable marine surveyor and repair professional check over the boat. People who repair boats every day are the best people to spot hidden or storm damage.
What to Look For
- Hull impact damage, previous repairs and excessive corrosion
- Stress cracks by cleats, transom and platform corners
- Frame separation or delamination of stringers and frames
- Blisters, gelcoat chips and dull or touched-up finish
- Soft or spongy decks and soles
- Rust stains in the bilge, worn belts, smoke at start up
- Discolored wiring, loose connections and chafe points
Before You Sign
- Set your budget including operating costs, dockage, insurance and winter storage.
- Research real selling prices for that model and year.
- Ask for maintenance and service records for engines, generator, A/C and water systems.
- Verify the HIN, title, registration, liens and lien releases.
- Get everything included in the sale in writing.
- Hire an independent surveyor — not one supplied by the broker or marina.
- Sea trial with load testing before closing.
