Before you have your boat launched, check the boat yourself. A 15 to 25 minute walk-around can help you save your season. Expect marina delays getting items repaired before spring launch due to a shortage of qualified marine workers.
Spring Commissioning Checklist
- Inspect the hull bottom, running gear, props, shafts, struts and rudders for damage or play.
- Check all underwater fittings, transducers and anodes; replace zincs that are more than half wasted.
- Open every seacock, check the handles, hose clamps and hoses for corrosion and cracking.
- Inspect the hull-to-deck joint, rub rail and any stress cracks that appeared over the winter.
- Check stringers, frames and bulkhead tabbing in the bilge for cracks or separation.
- Service engines and generators — oil, filters, impellers, belts, hoses and coolant.
- Check exhaust risers, manifolds and hose clamps for rust and leaks.
- Test batteries under load, inspect terminals, cables and charging systems.
- Run and test all bilge pumps, float switches and high-water alarms.
- Check steering and controls for full movement, leaks and worn cables.
- Test all electronics, navigation lights, horn and safety equipment; check flare and extinguisher dates.
- Pressure test and sanitize fresh water systems, check the waste system and macerator.
Anything that looks questionable should be documented and addressed before launch — repairs are always cheaper on the hard.
